Who we are

Book Bunk is a social impact firm founded in October 2017 by Wanjiru Koinange and Angela Wachuka, focused on the complete restoration of old library spaces as well as the installation of new libraries into public spaces. Our formation as an entity is inspired by a core belief that our public spaces are more essential than ever to our collective imagination. We imagine that public libraries can be steered to become more than just repositories, acting as sites of knowledge production, shared experiences, cultural leadership and information exchange. We see them as sites of heritage, public art, popular memory and as critical spaces in Nairobi and Kenya’s creative economy ecology.

What we do

Through a ground-breaking partnership with the Nairobi City County government, we are working on our first major project - the complete restoration of the McMillan Memorial Library (Kenya’s second oldest library) and two of its branches in the eastern part of the city (Kaloleni and Makadara). We also manage the curation and programming for these spaces.

Our vision

In recent years and against the backdrop of mega housing and other developments, the city’s spaces are hyper privatizing, often resulting in a complete lack of accessible public spaces, particularly in less privileged parts of Nairobi. The overall objective of this project is to restore these public libraries into inclusive and usable spaces where we can curate, present and document cultural and artistic programming that fosters citizen participation and usage of public libraries and their adjacent spaces, including social halls.
