Volunteering and Mental Health

Research has shown that loneliness and under-fulfilment are some of the major causes of mental health, especially, Depression. The benefits of volunteerism are numerous, and the improvement of one’s mental health is one such! With such active volunteerism, communities are transformed, and individuals impacted as well. This translates specifically to positive mental health benefits. On average, volunteers engage up to 120hours yearly in volunteerism. Not only does this help
the organizations and nonprofits, but it also comes with mental health rewards. It gives a sense of purpose, belonging, and upliftment. The communication with people within the volunteering community is essential for combating anxiety and brings career and emotional satisfaction. For older adults, this could result in lower stress, reduced risk of depression, lower blood pressure rate, etc.

Volunteering could help people with depression by enabling the volunteers to get out of their houses to interact with people within their community. It builds their confidence, courage, andself-esteem. Such social interactions keep them physically and mentally healthy. It is also important to note that maximizing the full benefits of such activity should come from full personal discretion. Fulfilment through active volunteerism comes from willingness, and a heartdesire to make an impact during the activity. In summary, volunteerism could help improve one’s mental health in an amazing way. And it should not be surprising if alongside exercising, that volunteerism becomes prescribed as one of the solutions to having and maintaining positive mental health.
